To Greenland

We woke up at dawn for a journey that will forever be etched in our memories. There were many discussions about the decision to depart. The weather in Iqaluit was not in our favor, with a low cloud ceiling and predicted icing conditions at altitude. While ice isn’t a problem for airliners, it is a significant concern for general aviation aircraft, which mostly lack de-icing systems. Avoiding ice is paramount.

The psychological aspect of the journey was ever-present. We could feel the excitement building. The thrill of such a crossing was palpable, and flight safety was constantly on our minds. We had about 700 km of overwater flying ahead of us.

We reviewed the latest forecasts over breakfast. The departure was confirmed. Low clouds were expected in the valley right after takeoff from Iqaluit, but conditions should improve after an hour of flight. To avoid icing, we planned to fly at 3,000 ft (1,000 m) above ground level.

At the airport, we donned our dry suits. We focused on the flight but were also excited to reach this milestone in our journey. We put on life jackets and placed the life raft in an easily accessible spot. The fueler had just finished filling the tanks. After a final walk-around to ensure everything was in order, we were ready to go!

We departed at a limited altitude. The landscapes in the Iqaluit valley were stunning. The water hadn’t completely thawed yet, creating spectacular scenes. Shortly after an hour of flight, we exited the fjord and the ocean stretched out before us. All engine parameters were in the green, and fuel was not a concern for this first major crossing. We headed towards Greenland with great emotion!

The scenery, though similar, was endlessly fascinating. Water stretched to the horizon in every direction. The reflection of clouds on the ocean created a surreal atmosphere. The music in our headsets allowed us to disconnect from the world below during the flight. We constantly monitored engine parameters: “Temperature and oil pressure in the green.” A sense of freedom enveloped us, despite knowing we were at the mercy of the weather, potential mechanical failures, and out of radio contact with land due to the distances involved.

A long crossing means the need to eat. Don’t worry, we had it all planned! Though we weren’t flying in business class, all services were included (almost). We enjoyed a good sandwich, and the meal ended with an espresso from our portable Nespresso machine (What else?). Yes, we could enjoy good coffee even in the middle of the ocean.

After a few hours of solitude over the water, we finally heard a human voice. Nuuk Information, Greenland’s air traffic control, contacted us. We were getting closer to the coast. A few minutes later, we began to see land in the distance. The mountains of Greenland’s west coast came into view, giving us chills. An extraordinary landscape unfolded. The water was a mix of navy blue from the ocean depths and almost turquoise from the melting ice. Hundreds of small islands passed beneath us, and we finally saw Nuuk, the capital of Greenland.

WE ARRIVED! We finally landed on the tarmac of the airport, where we were warmly welcomed. Surprisingly, there were no customs officers… the controller told us, “I notified them; it’s their problem if they don’t come.” The quickest border crossing ever! We went up to the control tower, enjoying a panoramic view of this small airport that will welcome Airbus aircraft next year. The impact of mass tourism was becoming evident even in these remote, previously protected areas.

Once we reached the hotel, our day was not over. Flying was great, but we also needed to move! We went for a run, each at our own pace (and yes… the story doesn’t say who is faster). The fresh coastal air of Nuuk was invigorating. Colorful houses were scattered everywhere, with views of the fjord.

A total change of scenery to end a day that will undoubtedly remain memorable.

Departure day

A departure to the Great North is a completely new experience. Successfully done on Saturday, June 22, 2024. A departure early in the morning for Kuujjuaq (CYVP), with two intermediate stops in Chibougamau (CYMT) and La Grande Rivière (CYGL).

Above all, it’s a journey into the unknown, so emotions are high when saying goodbye to loved ones. It’s not easy, it was planned of course, but nothing can prevent teary eyes.

Last loading of luggage, we spent a few hours the night before weighing and preparing everything, so it’s an almost normal pre-flight before starting up.

We leave the bad weather gradually settling over Montreal as we fly towards an azure blue sky to the north! The aircraft’s performance is exactly as measured many times, with even slightly lower fuel  consumption!

Uneventful stop in Chibougamau, heading towards La Grande Rivière. We’re not racing, so a small detour to tease Hudson Bay between Eastman River and Wemindji to enjoy the small islands within ‘swimming’ distance from the shore. Some isolated houses still, access tracks to logging sites as far as the eye can see, a few high voltage lines making the trip from La Grande’s dams to the metropolis. The vegetation becomes sparser, gradually giving way to the tundra scenery.

Flying over the La Grande dams before landing 2 minutes ahead of the Air Inuit cargo 737, greeted by a strong north wind. But at 25 degrees, we’re not yet putting on the tuque.

Lunch break at CYGL, with an unforgettable homemade clafoutis made with freshly picked cherries from home! The Air Inuit staff tells us another flight from Puvirnituq is scheduled to arrive around 3 pm. It lands, passengers disembark, and I find my cousin, a doctor in the Nunavik communities, among them! First improbable encounter of the day.

Departure to Kuujjuaq for a planned 3.5-hour flight. On instruments because northern weather is expected for the last 200 nautical miles. Sometimes above, sometimes within, sometimes between two layers, with views below of the bare northern landscapes, granite rocks, a few small streams, and above all, no signs of life.

Testing our HF radio setup, V antenna as per WWII lessons, and miraculously, we catch Gander Radio and the VOLMET providing weather for Luxembourg, London, and Reykjavik… very useful 😉

Visual approach to Kuujjuaq over the village and river without incident, and we park near our 100LL barrel waiting for us! No pump in the north, so we use our siphon, refueling for the next day!

The fuelman kindly lends us his pickup for the evening, no need to return it before tomorrow! Immediately we feel welcomed into a supportive community. An Air Inuit pilot comes to greet Julien and wish us a good flight!

Nearby inn, a haunt for northern workers. The bar is open, we drop by despite our growing fatigue. A man at a table comes up to me and says he recognizes me. Indeed, it’s none other than our neighbor from Montreal on Hampton Street! I understand why I saw him less often lately, 8 months based in Kuujjuaq, managing Nunavik’s social housing! He offers to show us around the village the next morning, see the infrastructure, and talk about his first months here. It’s fascinating, no doubt about it.

On-board equipment

This is our setup in flight. The classic analog pack has been enhanced with 2 Garmin GI275. The top one in AI mode and the bottom one in HSI/MAP mode.

The main GPS is an Avidyne IFD540. It is a fantastic NAV/COM unit with advanced FMS functions, very powerful for IFR operations.

The autopilot is the Garmin GFC500, installed as 2-axis, connected to the flight director.  It does fantastic in the Mooney and controls with finesse as the servos are connected to rigid control rods.

The transpondeur is the Avidyne AXP340, an 1090ES ADSB-out unit, which makes us legal in all ADS-B required control zones.

Equipment on-board

Being able to receive almost real-time weather and traffic data brings an extra level of safety that has become more affordable and easier. For long cross-country flights, I would almost argue it has become a necessity. ForeFlight then has been the perfect tool for me to integrate and visualize all of this data.

GDL51 XM-Weather receiver

The Garmin GDL51 boasts impressive weather information capabilities, offering pilots access to a comprehensive array of real-time weather data to enhance flight safety and planning. Data can be broadcasted to your preferred navigation software like ForeFlight or Garmin Pilot. This helps adjust navogation during the filght based on almost real-time data. The value of the XM-Weather data is also in the geographical coverage which extends beyond the USA FIS-B coverage areas.

Stratus 3 (ADS-B In)

The Stratus 3 ADS-B receiver is an essential  tool for pilots in North-America, delivering real-time traffic and subscription-free weather data to elevate safety and situational awareness during flights. With its compact design and seamless connectivity to electronic flight bag apps, you can get NEXRAD radar, METARs, TAFs directly on your iPad.

Iridium Go!

Well, if you’re planning to fly beyond range of cell phone coverage and even north of the XM-Weather radar coverage, Iridium connectivity is what you need to access weather information (see the ADLConnect section below). The Iridium Go! unit lets you connect your iPad & cell phone to it on Wi-Fi and then you can send & receive text messages, make phone calls and if needed send SOS message and activate SAR services. Hopefully data plans will soon become more affordable, however, it is now an essential tool when you fly for several hours in remote areas where weather can rapidly change.

Additional tools for weather

We naturally use the traditional national observation and forecast data streams, including for exemple in Canada the GFAs, SIGMET charts, METAR/TAFs, etc. However, for long cross-country flights and as we head North, we have expanded our sources and rapidly present them below. Feel free to reach out if you want more details.

Autorouter (pre-flight)

Autorouter.aero is fantastic and free. You can create your own account and either from the web, or from your cell phone via the Telegram messaging app, you have access to worldwide graphical weather mapping along the route you set. For pre-planning purpose, you actually can get the weather profile for days in advance.

Windy (pre-flight)

Windy is very well known for all outdoor activities, should they be on land, on the sea or in the air. You can get access to multiple layers of data days in advance of your planned trip amd then refine as departure approaches. I strongly recommend the Premium account that enables many new layers and new models. Additionally, recently added, you can get a cross section along a flight path that you have defined, like on the picture here. In particular for our lower altitude GA operations, the ´VFR’ setting is very appreciated.

ADLConnect (In-flight)

The application ADL Connect from Golze Engineering runs on an iPad/iPhone and can display weather (precipitation, infrared, lightning strikes, wind/temperature profiles as well as METAR/TAF along your route. On C-GJDP, the data is sourced from the Iridium satellites via our Iridium Go! unit connected to an external dedicated antenna. Golze engineering sell their own Iridium units and data plans if you want to check other options.

ADLConnect then broadcasts to other units connected on same WiFi network via the GDL90 protocol so that we can display info on ForeFlight or our Avidyne GPS also.

EzWxBrief (pre-flight)

EzWxbrief is a subscription-based advanced weather briefing tool offering precise and comprehensive weather information to enhance flight safety and planning. Its user-friendly interface allows pilots to quickly assess current conditions and anticipate potential weather-related challenges. Key features include customized alerts, route-specific weather analyses, and access to historical weather data, making EzWxbrief an essential tool for informed decision-making in aviation.

The features I favor the most are #1 the airport forecast diagram where you can graphically access forecast for cloud coverage, temperature & dew point, wind, ceiling, visibility, precipitation potential and convection potential and #2 the route planner and its very user-friendly departure advisor tool where you can decide when is the best moment to fly your route after you have set your own personal minimums.

I just wish EzWxBrief would work globally as currently coverage is CONUS and Canada up to approximately 55N latitude.

To make justice to the tool as it’s so much powerful, you can visit their website or view this description video.

Skew-T diagrams (Pre-flight)

Now, I’m talking to weather-geek pilots! A Skew-T (also named Skew-T log-P) diagram is a meteorological tool used to display and analyze atmospheric soundings, which include temperature, humidity, and pressure at various altitudes. The diagram features skewed temperature lines, allowing for easier interpretation of data. It helps assess atmospheric stability, identify moisture layers, and predict weather phenomena such as thunderstorms and turbulence, making it essential for weather forecasting and aviation safety.

It takes a bit of training and reading before you can interpret these diagrams, but once passed this initial phase, you can build your own mental picture of the atmosphere of where you intend to fly. You can select from several weather models, including some that have global geographical coverage.

Check of our gear

Today, Saturday, May 4, 2024, join us for a day filled with preparations for our exciting adventure. Before the grand departure, we decided to get into the spirit by heading to the Magdalen Islands for a full-scale simulation!

The day starts early on a rainy Saturday in Montreal. We head to St-Hubert Airport, loaded to the brim with all the necessary equipment for our upcoming Atlantic crossing. Our first mission: fitting everything into the plane. Without the need for Tetris skills, everything fits into the plane effortlessly. Jerry cans (three 5-gallon ones), travel bags, flight bags, a canoe, and life jackets are all in place!

We take off, start the satellite tracking to check the website’s functionalities, and set course for Sherbrooke (CYSC) for refueling and a well-deserved brunch. In flight, we notice that 100LL fuel is cheaper in St-Georges (CYSG), so we divert to this new destination after a quick contact with Quebec Radio. After successful refueling, we are disappointed to find the restaurant closed.

Ready for the next part of our journey, we don our dry suits and life jackets and take off towards the islands. We are in real conditions! Once in the air, with music in our ears, we enjoy the flight. However, after a few hours, nature calls, and we have to find a solution, putting our privacy aside and making do. It’s not first-class comfort, but the Mooney is certainly more fun!

After flying over northern Maine in the United States, we are now in contact with the Moncton sector controller and approaching the islands, hidden under a cloud cover. We begin the approach through the clouds. Then the sky clears, revealing a splendid view of the islands! The landing goes smoothly, and we are welcomed by a young aviation enthusiast, Felix Richard, who captures our arrival with his camera. He informs us that we are only the second private plane to reach the islands in 2024, following a C182 from Rimouski by a few days.

Hungry (note to all: never get in the way of a hungry pilot), we make our first stop at Cindyhook Café and enjoy its delicious homemade pistachio cream coffee! Then, heading south, we are lucky to find a table at Café de la Grave – the high season has not yet started. We take advantage of the clear sky to detour to the beach and dip our feet in the water, despite it being icy cold. Then comes the time to plan the return: this time, we opt for a direct flight to Montreal, without any stops!

Four hours of flying above the clouds, with an exceptional view of the sunset, and we are back at St-Hubert Airport by 9 PM. This intense day allowed us to test our equipment and convinced us that our adventure will be memorable. And this is just the beginning of the story!
